Fruit stickers with numerical codes provide important information about how produce is grown. A five-digit code starting with 9 indicates organic farming, while a code starting with 8 signifies genetically modified (GMO) produce. GMOs are rare, and concerns about their health risks are still under research. A four-digit code starting with 3 or 4 shows conventionally grown produce, which typically uses synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. While organic farming uses compost and mechanical weed control, research suggests there is no significant nutritional difference between organic and conventional produce. The International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) introduced this system in the 1990s to ensure quality and streamline the supply chain. Participation is voluntary, so not all produce adheres to these standards. Understanding these codes can help consumers make informed choices while shopping, especially those focused on dietary preferences.
