The Finger Clubbing Test: A Simple Way to Detect Lung Cancer and Other Health Conditions

Finger clubbing is a noticeable change in the shape of the fingers and nails, often linked to serious health conditions such as lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic respiratory issues. A simple at-home test, known as the Schamroth Window Test, can help identify this condition.

How to Perform the Test:

  1. Place the tips of your index fingers together, nail to nail.
  2. Check for a small diamond-shaped gap between the nails.
    • Normal: A visible gap.
    • Abnormal: No gap, which may indicate finger clubbing.

Potential Causes:

  • Lung Cancer – A common cause, especially with chronic coughing or weight loss.
  • Chronic Lung Disease – Conditions like COPD and TB.
  • Heart Disease – Affects oxygen levels, leading to clubbing.

If you notice clubbing or other symptoms like breathlessness or chest pain, consult a doctor for further evaluation.
