SCOTUS Rejects Appeal to Review Climate Lawsuits

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected appeals to review lawsuits filed by states and local governments against oil companies seeking compensation for climate change-related damages. Critics argue these lawsuits, which could result in billions in payouts, promote anti-fossil fuel policies and may ultimately burden consumers with higher costs. O.H. Skinner of the Alliance for Consumers cautioned that such legal actions could drive up expenses for customers and advance Green New Deal policies through court rulings. A coalition of 19 states has challenged these lawsuits, which use state nuisance laws to target energy companies. The Biden administration contends the cases aren’t ready for Supreme Court review, while opponents allege they are backed by dark money from liberal groups aiming to regulate the energy sector through litigation. The decision leaves the lawsuits to proceed in lower courts, raising concerns about their broader economic and policy implications.
