Matthew Huttle, a participant in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop on January 26, shortly after being pardoned by Donald Trump. Huttle, 42, had served six months in prison for his involvement in the insurrection and was released in July 2024. Trump’s recent wave of pardons included over 1,500 individuals tied to the Capitol attack.
The fatal incident occurred in Indiana when an altercation broke out between Huttle and a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy during the stop. Authorities confirmed Huttle was armed but provided no further details about the arrest attempt or the shooting. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as an investigation unfolds.
Huttle, who previously claimed the FBI orchestrated the Capitol riot and alleged involvement of highly trained “actors,” has become a focal point in ongoing debates surrounding Trump’s pardons and the January 6 events.
