Family of American Airlines pilot reveals heartbreaking final conversation before the plane crashed

American Airlines pilot Jonathan Campos was among the 67 victims of the tragic January 29 collision between Flight 5342 and a U.S. military helicopter near Washington, D.C. His uncle, John Lane, recounted their last conversation—a joyful 10-minute chat before Jonathan boarded, excited about an upcoming family cruise. Jonathan had always aspired to be a pilot and worked tirelessly to fly larger aircraft. Lane expressed both sorrow and pride, remembering him as a hardworking and kind young man. The crash involved 64 passengers and four crew members from the flight, along with three crew members in the helicopter. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation.
