Early Stroke Warning Signs
A stroke may give subtle warnings weeks in advance. Recognizing these signs can prevent a life-threatening event.
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) or “mini-stroke” is a key early warning. It occurs when blood flow to the brain is briefly blocked, causing symptoms like numbness, slurred speech, vision issues, or dizziness. These symptoms often resolve quickly but are a critical red flag.
Other warning signs include:
- Sudden Weakness or Numbness: Especially on one side of the body.
- Speech Problems: Difficulty speaking or understanding.
- Vision Changes: Blurred or lost vision.
- Balance Issues: Unsteady walking or dizziness.
Know your risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or smoking, and prepare by identifying the nearest stroke center and keeping a list of medications.
Act immediately if symptoms occur. Fast treatment reduces the risk of long-term damage and improves recovery chances. Call emergency services right away.
