In Pembroke, Ontario, the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP has launched Project Safe Trade, introducing parking spots marked with a handshake insignia outside the Pembroke OPP station at 77 International Dr. These designated zones provide secure, monitored spaces for online sales and purchases, accessible 24/7 without appointments.
The initiative encourages shifting transactions from private settings to public areas, particularly with the holiday season increasing online activity. Constable Mike Mahon noted that reluctance to use these zones could signal fraud. While the OPP won’t mediate or witness transactions, they will respond if criminal issues arise.
To stay safe, the OPP recommends meeting in busy public areas, bringing a friend, conducting transactions during daylight, and keeping communication records. Technology analyst Carmi Levy also advises researching sellers and verifying items before purchases. These measures aim to enhance security and prevent online fraud.
