Japan has recently uncovered manganese nodules off the coast of Minami-Tori-shima island, a discovery that has the potential to greatly enhance its economy. Located 5,700 meters underwater, these nodules are rich in cobalt and nickel, crucial materials for electric vehicle batteries and high-tech products. Valued at over $26 billion, with cobalt estimated at around $14.7 billion and nickel at about $12 billion, this find is significant. Researchers intend to begin extracting up to three million tons annually using specialized mining vessels from overseas. This initiative aims to establish a domestic supply chain for resource mining and manufacturing, securing Japan’s economic future while minimizing environmental harm. This project could also position Japan as a global leader in both resource mining and technology.
