Xavier’s announcement about his fiancée, Cindy, filled us with excitement. Wanting to welcome her into the family, my husband and I prepared a special dinner. However, the moment Cindy walked in, my heart sank—she was the spitting image of a woman our neighbor, Margaret, had warned us about, a scammer who had conned her son out of thousands under the pretense of wedding expenses.
I knew I had to act quickly. I led Cindy to the basement under the pretense of choosing a wine and locked her in as soon as she stepped inside. “Call the police!” I yelled to my husband. Xavier was shocked and demanded an explanation. “She’s a scammer!” I insisted.
When the police arrived, Cindy remained composed. She explained that she had been mistaken for this scammer before. An officer even confirmed that the actual culprit had a similar name but was last seen in Mexico.
Feeling deeply embarrassed, I apologized. Cindy, showing incredible grace, forgave me and even joked that this would make a memorable story for her and Xavier’s future children.
