Rescue teams detail ‘horrors’ they saw

Recovery efforts continue for the victims of the tragic DC plane crash following a collision on January 29 between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines plane over the Potomac River. The crash claimed 67 lives.

So far, 55 bodies have been recovered, but frigid conditions have made the operation difficult. Ice in the river has slowed progress, and a Metropolitan Police diver was treated for hypothermia but has since recovered.

Emergency responders have described the scene as emotionally overwhelming, with one firefighter recounting the harrowing sights beneath the water, despite its clarity.
