This energy source, thorium, is a radioactive metal that produces 200 times more energy than uranium and generates minimal radioactive waste. Researchers found large quantities of thorium in mining waste, particularly at the Bayan Obo mining complex, which could yield one million tonnes of thorium. Geologist Fan Honghai highlighted that thorium could be an environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source. However, extracting thorium is challenging and requires significant energy and acid. Despite concerns about misuse, experts note that thorium is not suitable for nuclear weapons. The exact amount of thorium in China remains confidential for security reasons. Nonetheless, this discovery offers substantial potential for future energy solutions.
