The U.S. Department of Justice under Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to pause legal cases related to President Joe Biden’s policies, such as student loan forgiveness and environmental regulations. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed motions to delay proceedings while the new administration reviews these policies. The Supreme Court was scheduled to hear arguments soon, but the Trump DOJ is seeking to freeze deadlines, potentially postponing the cases indefinitely.
Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, which canceled debts for over 5 million students, has faced legal challenges from Republican attorneys general, who argue Biden exceeded his authority. The 5th Circuit Court blocked Biden’s “borrower defense” rule, intended to cancel loans for defrauded students. While the Supreme Court had agreed to review these cases, the Trump administration’s request may make them irrelevant. Additionally, Trump has opposed Biden’s climate agenda, supporting increased domestic fossil fuel production instead.
